Is It Better To Gargle With Mouthwash Or Salt Water?
Posted on 10/10/2018 by Dr. Call
When it comes to your oral health, use of a mouthwash is an important step to maintain healthy teeth and gums. However, you may have heard of people gargling with salt water and find yourself confused about the difference between the two. While both salt water and mouthwash are important parts of an oral hygiene routine, there is one major difference – duration. Mouthwash is Good for Long-Term Use If you need a way to keep plaque levels under control, mouthwash is your best option. Safe for long-term use, mouthwash has a neutral pH, so it won't affect the overall oral environment. It is safe for everyday use, and certain options may be formulated to treat particular dental issues. For example, some mouth wash varieties are actually prescribed by your dentist to help with gum disease. If you don't have any specific dental needs, simply choose a mouthwash that contains fluoride, and you should enjoy healthier teeth and fresher breath. Salt Wafer Can Help with Short-Term Troubles While gargling with salt water isn't recommended for long-term use, it can be beneficial in the treatment of acute issues. Specifically, gargling with salt water is often recommended to treat oral wounds. If you are recovering from surgery to remove your wisdom teeth, your dentist may recommend this option, as salt water can act as a natural disinfectant. Salt water can also reduce tissue swelling, and ultimately, it can speed up the healing process as you recover from your procedure. Unfortunately, long-term use of salt water could cause some oral problems. The pH balance of your mouth could be impacted, and this could ultimately cause weakening of the enamel. With time, your teeth will be put at risk of cavities and other issues. If you are in need of a new mouth wash, give our office a call. We'll help you find the solution that will work best for your mouth....
