How to Properly Care for Dentures

dentures sitting in a glass of water held by a patient of Billsboro dentist, Century Dental.Dentures are a common solution for replacing missing teeth. They are a removable restoration that is made from impressions of your mouth. Dentures consist of acrylic resin teeth that are set into an acrylic base. The teeth can be designed to look just like natural teeth, while the base can be colored to perfectly match your natural gum tissue. The result is a realistic looking restoration that gives you back your abilities to eat and speak, while also restoring your smile and confidence. For your dentures to properly do their job, they require proper care. Century Dental is here to help.

Before Removing Your Dentures

While your dentures can withstand a significant amount of daily use, allowing you to bite and chew a variety of different foods, they can easily be damaged. Before removing your dentures, place a folded towel on your bathroom counter or fill the sink with water. This will provide a cushion in case you accidentally drop them.

Proper Cleaning for Your Dentures

Your dentures should be brushed and rinsed every day. This is essential for eliminating the plaque and bacteria that can accumulate on them. However, they should not be brushed with regular toothpaste. Toothpaste contains abrasives that can cause microscopic scratches. These scratches provide hiding places for bacteria, which can lead to serious oral health issues. Instead, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and denture paste or soap and water.

Soaking Dentures Overnight

Once you have finished brushing your dentures, it is important to soak them overnight in a denture cleaning solution. Soaking dentures prevent them from drying out and warping them. Leaving your dentures out overnight also gives your gums a chance to rest. Because dentures rest directly on your gums, they put pressure on sensitive tissue and restrict blood flow. Leaving them out ensures that blood flows properly to your veins and provides the tissue with essential nutrients.

Denture Repair

If your dentures need repairs or are in need of adjustments, do not attempt to do these on your own. Attempting to fix your dentures can result in damage. If your dentures have any metal components, bending them can cause them to become weak. If your dentures feel awkward in your mouth, feel uncomfortable, or you suspect there might be a problem, it is important that you call our office to make an appointment.

Taking Care of Your Mouth

For your dentures to work properly, it is important that you take care of the rest of your mouth properly. Brush and floss your healthy teeth every day. In addition to taking care of your teeth, you should also take care to brush your gums as well as your other intraoral tissues. Even if all of your teeth have been replaced by dentures, it is still important that you continue to take care of your mouth. Brushing your gums, and other intraoral tissues helps to eliminate plaque and bacteria that can lead to gum disease and other significant complications.
