Reasons it Could Hurt to Bite Down

Good oral hygiene practices should be considered one of the most important things you do in your day. We want to remind you that it is the first step to having good overall physical health. The things we eat or drink are how we fuel ourselves to get through each day.

We know there are tons of food and drink options out there for you, and something's may not be the best. That is why we continue to remind you to brush your teeth twice a day, floss once a day, and continue to make regular office visits. Waiting for warning signs can lead to infection, tooth decay, and spending more time at the dentist. Here are some reasons why it can hurt when you bite down.

Reasons Why it May Hurt When You Bite Down

You may notice a sharp pain when you bite down, and then it goes away. This may be a sign of a cracked tooth. There are a couple things that can cause these cracks. Popcorn kernels, and chewing on ice are big sources. Hard candy, nuts, or pencils are some more just to name a few.

You may not be able to tell which tooth is causing you pain. The soft tissue, or pulp, on the inside of your tooth contains blood vessels and nerves that become irritated when exposed due to cracks or broken teeth. When you bite down that can cause discomfort or even a sharp pain in your mouth.

You may avoid using that side of your mouth, and wait for it to go away if you don't notice a crack. Sometimes finding a crack can be tricky. They most likely will be in one of your lower molars, and somewhere along the gum line.

Your bottom teeth take most of the force when biting down. This can also be from clenching or grinding your teeth, or tooth decay. Remember the pain you feel is your body's way of telling you something is wrong, and it is time to get it checked out.

Any kind of pain or discomfort that lasts for more than a few days is definitely something you should get looked at. It may be something small that can lead to infection. There is really no way to predict what the problem is without an exam since each person is unique in their own way.

We encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns, and schedule an appointment for pain that does not go away. Our goal is to keep you happy and healthy, so please do not put it off for any extended period of time. Taking care of something small could and will save you lots of time and stress.

If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please call us at (971) 708-1608 today.

Services Offered

Preventive Dentistry

We are passionate about preventing problems before they start. We do so by educating our patients about what positive dental habits they can be forming and having our patients visit us twice a year for exams and cleanings.

Restorative Dentistry

We understand that often, due to circumstances outside of your control, your mouth may need restorative actions taken. That’s why we offer a bevy of restorative procedures to bring your smile back to it’s original luster.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Frequently we hear that the procedures that make the biggest difference in our patient’s smiles are cosmetic in nature. Whitening, veneers and Invisalign® are just a few of the cosmetic procedure we offer!

IV Sedation

For those patients that need more than just oral sedation we offer what is often called “sleep sedation”. If anxiety is an issue or if the procedure calls for it we can easily place you under full anesthesia to ensure that you rest peacefully through the whole thing.

Dental Implants

If you have lost a tooth or are looking at tooth removal as an option, dental implants are the most highly recommended form of replacement for teeth. Dental implants involve inserting a titanium post into your jaw which will fuse with your bone structure. The post will be topped with a crown made specifically to fit your bite. The result is a form of tooth replacement that looks and acts exactly as your real tooth would. It even prevents bone loss, which is a common side effect of tooth loss.

Dental Technology

We are happy to use a great variety of cutting edge technology in our practice. Digital X-rays are one of our staples in dental tech. Standard X-rays can take time to view and process but with the advent of digital X-rays we can view the inner workings of your mouth almost instantly. We are also able to take higher quality X-rays that allow us to detect things like tooth decay within the tooth, cysts, tumors, and impacted teeth. Further, the radiation you receive from a digital X-ray device is about 1/5th that of a standard X-ray.

We also offer intraoral cameras and ultrasonic scalers. The intraoral cameras aid us in detecting any issues within your mouth that may need further dental attention. Ultrasonic scalers are by far the most effective method for removing built up plaque and tartar that has accumulated on teeth.
