Mouthwash Can Do More Than Kill Germs in Your Mouth

Posted on 5/10/2017 by Dr. Call
A man using mouthwash to clean his mouth.
Along with brushing and flossing, mouthwash can be an excellent addition to your oral hygiene routine. You always hear mouthwash as being beneficial for its ability to kill germs that live in your mouth. While this is important, mouthwash actually does so much more than simply kill germs.

Remove Food Particles
Swishing mouthwash around in your mouth and between your teeth does more than ensure that you reach all crevices that might have a buildup of germs and bacteria. It also helps to loosen stuck food particles from these spaces, which would have otherwise become a buffet for oral bacteria.

Fights Bad Breath

Sure, mouthwash kills germs, but did you know these germs could lead to bad breath? No one wants to be plagued with foul smelling breath. Just be sure that if you want a mouthwash to fight bad breath, you should opt for an alcohol-free variety, as alcohol can contribute to dry mouth.

Prevent Gum Disease

Another important factor in killing germs and bacteria lingering around in your mouth: your risk for gum disease decreases. Gum disease is a serious oral health issue that can lead to consequences such as receding gums, loose teeth, bone loss in your jaw and even tooth loss.

By effectively killing germs and bacteria, this means there are less bacteria to cause damage in the first place. However, if you already have gum disease that has progressed beyond gingivitis, you will need dental intervention, as a mouthwash (along with brushing and flossing) will not be enough to help your gums and teeth heal.

Remineralize Teeth

Some mouthwashes are formulated with fluoride, which is a mineral that is important to the strength of your enamel. Every day, acids produced by bacteria eat away at the enamel layer, so it needs to be remineralized.

A fluoride mouthwash provides your teeth with these essential minerals directly, helping to ensure strong teeth and enamel that is more resistant to bacterial attack.

Yes, mouthwash kills bacteria. In killing that bacteria, it can prevent serious oral health issues. Mouthwash can be an important part of your daily routine. Contact our office for more information.

Services Offered

Preventive Dentistry

We are passionate about preventing problems before they start. We do so by educating our patients about what positive dental habits they can be forming and having our patients visit us twice a year for exams and cleanings.

Restorative Dentistry

We understand that often, due to circumstances outside of your control, your mouth may need restorative actions taken. That’s why we offer a bevy of restorative procedures to bring your smile back to it’s original luster.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Frequently we hear that the procedures that make the biggest difference in our patient’s smiles are cosmetic in nature. Whitening, veneers and Invisalign® are just a few of the cosmetic procedure we offer!

IV Sedation

For those patients that need more than just oral sedation we offer what is often called “sleep sedation”. If anxiety is an issue or if the procedure calls for it we can easily place you under full anesthesia to ensure that you rest peacefully through the whole thing.

Dental Implants

If you have lost a tooth or are looking at tooth removal as an option, dental implants are the most highly recommended form of replacement for teeth. Dental implants involve inserting a titanium post into your jaw which will fuse with your bone structure. The post will be topped with a crown made specifically to fit your bite. The result is a form of tooth replacement that looks and acts exactly as your real tooth would. It even prevents bone loss, which is a common side effect of tooth loss.

Dental Technology

We are happy to use a great variety of cutting edge technology in our practice. Digital X-rays are one of our staples in dental tech. Standard X-rays can take time to view and process but with the advent of digital X-rays we can view the inner workings of your mouth almost instantly. We are also able to take higher quality X-rays that allow us to detect things like tooth decay within the tooth, cysts, tumors, and impacted teeth. Further, the radiation you receive from a digital X-ray device is about 1/5th that of a standard X-ray.

We also offer intraoral cameras and ultrasonic scalers. The intraoral cameras aid us in detecting any issues within your mouth that may need further dental attention. Ultrasonic scalers are by far the most effective method for removing built up plaque and tartar that has accumulated on teeth.
